Crystals and Metals

Kyanite Pendulum

Types, Uses, and How to Clean:

It's absolutely important to note that this is a rather personal thing to make. Don't let this list fool you though.Research every possibility out there and take this guide with a grain of salt. If none of these feel right to you, then find one that does. Every witch is different, so there is never a one size fits all in these cases. I hope you find this list helpful and informative. Blessed be, Witches.

Crystals:

There are HUNDREDS of crystals and sites that you can easily use to find these resources, the issue is that many are different or based on personal feeling. With this being said, I'm only going to list the best crystals for pendulums in my personal experience. I, personally, have a very difficult time relating to any crystal aside from amethyst and citrine.

Amethyst:
OF COURSE this is at the top. Amethyst is the #1 go to for any and ALL divination purposes. It's a purple quartz, so it often more translucent than other stones. What's important here is really it's color. The more richer the purple, the better it is for a pendulum.

Atacamite:
This stone is wonderful for clearing your mind so you can better focus on the task at hand. It can also help open your third eye.

Purple Flourite:
Again, opens your third eye, but it also helps out with decerning the meaning of messages.

Kyanite:
This crystal is special because it actually "cleans itself" by not holding onto negative energies. It's also perfect for finding truths and justice.

Labradorite:
This is an all purpose stone, especially in workings with divination.

Moonstone:
Another obvious choice. It's namesake should tell you that this wonderfully mystic stone is perfect for finding things and answers while also upping your intuition.

Obsidian:
This is an overall wonderful scrying stone because of its black color. It can show you the answers to the unknown.

Clear Quartz:
This is like the white candle of the crystals. If all else fails, or you just don't have any other stone, use clear quartz.

Turquoise:
This is wonderful when dealing with communication to the other side.

Metals:

These can be used as the chain, the stand, and as the weight, itself.

Iron:
This is best for working outside of the body, but in terms of divination tools, I would say that it helps to connect to the universal truth.

Nickel:
This is perfect for divination because it's often used to find answers and help work through personal breakthroughs.

Platinum:
This works best for foresight, as well as hindsight.

Silver:
This is another special element that doesn't need to be cleaned. It can help to keep the weight you use neutral in its answers as well.

Woods:

Ash:
Promotes communication, intelligence, and wisdom. This is also the wood of the tree, Yggdrasil, that Odin sacrificed himself to gain the knowledge of the Volva. Hands down, the best wood for divination tools.

Beech:
All around divination and magickal research.

Cherry:
This is often used for intuition aid and insights, so this can be helpful, but might not be the best choice.

Maple:
Helps with acquiring knowledge and communications.

Oak:
Assists with concentration and focuses the mind.

Willow:
Assists with the third eye and other divination pursuits.

Other items to consider:

Seashells! Yes, seashells. They're all natural, which is what you want, they're heavy, some have points, and they're beautiful! These would be perfect for sea witches or those mostly connected to the water element.

Random rocks, yeah... Sometimes they just fall right into your lap. Other times your kids throw them at you or stuff them in your pocket. I've found some really pretty rocks all over the place. Lava rock is great for those who prefer the fire element or live in a hot place.

String: So long as its all natural, use it. Purple is the best color, but others can be white or even black and blue.

Charms, but so long as they're not crazy. If you get the ones that open, you can write your intent in them plus some herbs. Even beads are nice and can be as simple or complex as you like. Make your own with resin casts.

Don't like any of those? Make your own crystal:

How to Clean:

However you like, honestly. Lay it out in the moon light. Use smoke from incense or a smudge. Run it through a flame or even water. This part is really up to you and how you feel is best. I work with candles a lot, so I often choose the candle flame. If you do this, don't hold it in the flame, just pass the crystal through it three or nine times. If it's wood or string, please DO NOT cleanse using a flame. Remember Smokey the Bear!

Pendulums ( with free download boards)

Purchase this on Etsy now.

What Are Pendulums?

A pendulum is usually a specific type of weight hanging from a chain or string. It can be a fancy crystal, piece of metal, or even a rock. It could even be a seashell. It freely swings using gravity and momentum from a pivot point either circling or moving in a (somewhat) straight line. They can be used to answer questions, on spirit boards for more complex situations, or to even find items. The user uses their own energy to communicate with it, so its not often something that can be used by multiple people and should be cleansed before giving it away.

There are two ways to use a pendulum. You can either hold the chain in your hand and dangle it over the divination mat or map or you can use a stand, also called a fob. Holding it in your hand can cause a bit of user error. The human body has its own movements even if you don't notice them or cause them consciously. By using a stand, this problem will be eliminated making for a more precise  outcome. There are many different types of stands.

History of Use:

The Chinese scientist Zhang Heng used the pendulum in the first century to detect earthquake tremors. He was a geographer, astrologer, astronomer, and a mathematician. He used his gifts and knowledge to predict future events for the Emperor in the Han Dynasty. It then traveled to Europe in the 1400's through Dowsing. This was originally used to find metals in Germany, but in 1518, Martin Luther wrote it in as an act that broke the First Commandment. (But don't remind him that Moses used one to find water under a rock.)

Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia Index
Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia Image of Dowsing in a mine.
It was used very extensively throughout the world, before it was inevitably ended, and with wonderful results. However it wasn't used for divination until the Roma traveled through Italy and brought it to a more "main stream" view. To avoid persecution, they would disguise the tool as a necklace.

The oldest recorded use of the pendulum was actually found on a cave dwelling in Algeria. The more I read about it, it seems they mixed it up with a Dowsing Rod, much like the Germans above. As far as divination goes, some will say it was Romans. They would predict the outcome of battles using one. This is also where we get the idea behind using letters as they would place one suspended in a glass jar. Every time the correct letter was said, it would tap the glass. That sounds extremely time consuming to me, but they relied on it enough to use it.

How to Read Using a Pendulum

Free Download
As said before, you can use this multiple situations. You can create your own mat using a simple design, or even go grandiose and use or make your own board in the same fashion of a Ouija Board. The traditional way is pictured below in the free downloads.

  • Yes is straight, going up and down.
  • No is straight going from the left to the right.
  • Ask Again/No Answer is from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. You'll usually get this when you should reword your question or the answer isn't meant to be known to you.
  • Maybe is from the bottom left to the upper right. I honestly hate maybe's because it's basically just saying "Make a decision and ask if was the right one".
  • If it goes in a circle clockwise, its a possible yes. This usually means that as your path is today, you're going the right direction to make this happen
  • Counter clockwise circle is a possible no, meaning as things are right now, it's not going to happen.

Free Download
In the image to the upper left, you see a more complex board allowing you to even spell out an answer, while the right is mainly intended for those new to using a pendulum and easy to answer questions. I like placing them under a stand. Instead of touching the pendulum while asking my question, I place the tips of my fingers barely on the stand itself to eliminate all possible forms of human error. The point is for the pendulum to utilize your energy and higher self to find the answer. Others will go all out by calling the corners, casting a circle, and meditating to clear their mind. All, including myself, will suggest you speak out loud and explain the situation if need be.

Before use, you should always consecrate your tools for their purpose. On your first reading, you'll need to set the directions up by instructing the pendulum what direction each answer is or to use the pendulum board to give you the answer. If you don't do this, it won't know how to answer you and it might have its own way of doing things, which can give a false reading.

In our next blog, we'll go over the different types of metals for chains and crystals as well other fun objects you probably never thought of to make your own pendulum.

The Hanging Man - 12 -

The Hanged Man - 11 -

Suspension, Limbo, Alternative view, Letting go

Self-sacrifice, Tied up, Indecision

The man in this image is chained to a beam above the underworld. His arms arm tied by the vines, signifying an earthly connection. The sun behind his head is the heavens shining through the stained glass window beset in a stone wall. What people don't fully realize with this card is that this is his own doing. This can be a form of self-sacrifice or forsaking oneself or one's needs for the greater good. You may be asked to do this in your life or to let go of something, but you'll receive better. This pose is what the decided to be in, so you're likely needing a new perspective of some type. Just try thinking out of the box, or on your head. (ha!) Once looking at the situation or problem from another view point, you will be able to make a better decision or have a better understanding. In less literal terms, the hanged man can mean being caught up or delayed in a way, or should be. Take a time out and let things rest before rushing in. New and better options may present themselves, or just a better way of handling the situation. It could also be that you're stuck in life, but instead of fidgeting and getting yourself into even more of a knot, take a deep breath and relax. Wait it out. Open up to new experiences. Surrender. Accept the circumstances and allow them to happen, for now.

Reversed

The sacrifice you have given is returning nothing. Everything has been put on hold because of issues effecting you both internally and externally. It feels as if you're unable to move in any direction, but this lack of movement is due to a major change about to bulldoze through your life. This can also mean that you're arrogantly putting off a decision hoping it will work itself out, but it won't. Your own lack of movement can be a problem. The issue is still there, probably getting worse, and it still needs you to do something about it if you like the outcome or not. You could've lost your own way, religiously or emotionally, and can't seem to find your way to the greener side. You must accept the inevitable, change what you can, and try your best to find happiness.

Preparing and Reading a Cup for Tasseography

Preparing and Reading a Cup for Tasseography

So this post is really going to be rather quick and simple. There's not much of a right or wrong way and I do have videos on my Facebook where I already went over most of this information, however the videos are not all that great of a quality, so I'll rerecord and then upload them later.

Now, you brew your tea by adding roughly 1/2 a teaspoon for every 8 ounces of hot water in a cup loosely. It's best to use specifically loose leaf tea and not the ground up type in bags, but I've done both and have not had an issue with it. The type of tea is also largely a personal choice. Every Sunday (except today) on my Instagram I review a new type of tea from this wonderful subscription box, Simple Loose Leaf. It costs me about $11 a month and I get four types of teas with enough for five cups each bag. Each box is different and wonderful and each tea is unique which is why I use them. I want to show people that you can use nearly any type of tea to do this and there isn't really a right or a wrong way. You can also add sweetener to your tea, but it's not suggested to use creamer. I haven't added creamer to test the waters, but I do plan on doing it at some point.

What is important is the PROCESS.

Now, tasseography will always deal with things that are happening with a past, present, future theme, so keep that in mind when doing your reading. The only time this process changes is when you're using a specialty cup. We'll discuss all of these types of cups in a later post. For the purpose of this post, we'll be referencing just a plain porcelain tea cup with a saucer.

The process is also very simple, but it must be done right. As you drink your tea, you can focus on a particular issue or just enjoy it, but when you're done, leave just a slight bit of tea in the up with all the leaves. Turn the cup over with the handle facing your dominant hand. Now, a lot of references will tell you the right, but I feel dominant is best because that's usually the hand you send energy out through. I think it's a) because most people are right handed and b) back when this popular and thriving as a main stream practice, people thought left handers were evil and all that other crazy nonsense. Anyway, tap the bottom on the cup, now facing upwards three times. Turn the cup full circle three times using your NON-dominant hand while it's still upside down. You can turn it the left for a past reading, the right for a future reading, or a combination of both for something you're focusing on in the present  or a generalized reading. Then tap three times on the bottom and turn the cup right-side up. Make sure the handle is still facing your dominant hand.

Now, for this part you'll understand why the handle placement isn't really all that important. At this time move the handle so that it is directly in front of you. The handle is now your dividing line.

If you are asking a Yes or No question:
The left is no and the right is yes. Read which side has the most tea leaves on it.

If you are reading Past, Present, Future for a "When..." question:
The rim of the cup is present. The body of the cup is future, and the bottom of the cup is distant future.
You can read this one of two ways-
1) Go by where the greatest amount of tea leaves sit.
2) If it was a general "What does my future hold" read the images.

If you're asking about a timing:
Read to the left, or clockwise, starting at the handle going by months. Split the cup visually into 12 pie slices and eye it as best as you can. You can also use this in other ways.
1) A month: split it into 4 weeks
2) Seasons : split it into 4 seasons starting with spring
3) 6 months
4) Etc.
Which ever you feel or want to look into. If the majority of the leaves are stuck at the bottom and you can't see any images, it's likely to not happen in that time frame.

Another common way to read is about something effecting you or your life, or a Cause and Effect
The way you read this the left is the past circumstances or influences
The right is how it will turn out because of the past.

Justice - 11 -

Justice - 11 -

Balance, Law, Equality, Legal Matters, Truth

Dishonesty, Unfairness, Criminal, Lack of accountability

While in traditional tarot, justice is usually blindfolded to show impartiality, in this deck they use the scales with diamonds and a feather. Both hold the same weight and therefore are equal in her eyes. The cards falling from her hand are the reversed hanging man (indecision/water), queen of wands (determination/fire), eight of swords (restriction/air), and the ace of pentacles (new business/earth). Each is a facet of justice and also an element. There are both good and bad and we must deal with them throughout life. Without both, this simply isn't a fair world. In literal terms, the Justice card can mean a court ruling in your favor. This card calls for the utmost fairness, even if it's not in your favor. Take a step back and look at the situation from an intellectual perspective where you can make the best decision. You are the judge, but can you make this right? Be truthful and honest with yourself and others. Playing fair will give everyone a positive outcome.

Reversed

Either someone in your circle or you, yourself, are being dishonest. There is a sense of superficial belief or it's always your way or no way, removing the availability for justice to preside. This can also be a literal interpretation of an unjust ruling, jail time, or a ticket. It could be a clouded mind not passing fair judgement. It could even be that life and the universe are seemingly dishing out unfair trouble. If the path is becoming too difficult, take a break, but be sure that you're headed in the direction you're going for a reason. You could also be a very black and white kind of person. This card is meant to tell you that sometimes in life there is a little grey or a splash of color, and doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Let loose and try not to be so rigid. Try to get back in touch with that human part of yourself.

Introduction into Tasseography

Tasseography
The study of reading a cup using tea leaves, coffee grounds, and even wine sediments. From the French word for cup; tasse. Also known as tasseomancy and tassology. Some believe that it works due to how a drinker influences a cup of tea while drinking it since, even subconsciously, we are thinking about something at all times. Others look at it as a form of clairvoyance called psychometry where you use inanimate objects to gain insight.

A History of Tea

Teas were introduced to the Western world in the 17th century from China to India, and then to Europe through the Dutch trading companies. It's supposed that tea reading began in China soon after tea's discovery by Emperor Shen Nun in 2800 BC. It was developed by monks who started with reading the cracks in bells to foretell the future. The origin story talks about a group of friends who sat down to enjoy a cup of tea while chatting. When done with their tea, one person noticed how the leaves formed pictures relating to their conversations. The way this happened is how many speculate the term "throwing cups" came about. Tea was almost always drank loosely, so you would have to throw out the remaining leaves before getting another cup. Unless you rinse it, there's almost always some residing afterwards, which should form pictographs that can be interpreted.
Unfortunately, soon after tea met Europe, the Tea Act was singed in England making the drink only accessible to the upper class since importing it was so expensive. This then turned the act of tasseography into a parlor trick. In the early 1800's, a Scottish botanist, Robert Fortune (haha!, the irony) was able to replicate the growing processes so that tea was more readily available to any and everyone. This attracted the traveling Romani into the parlors who would share their gifts of Fortune telling. The art and parlors even spilled into America arrive the first would war since it was cheap and fun.

We'll discuss how to use tea leaves in the next post, then move on to coffee and wine. You can join us on Instagram every Sunday to see our tea reviews and weekly cups.
